Slide 1: CAPS Welcomes you to Group Advising

Slide 2: While you are waiting for your session to begin, Introduce yourself to the people in the room. You might discover another student in your program!

Make sure your "advising profile sheet" is complete

Check to be sure you have your program sheet, test scores, and schedule of classes

Slide 3: Why Group Advising?
We want you to learn to use college technology to access resources and information Use SIS to locate classes, as well as the College and CAPS website. We want you to develop an academic plan consistent with your interests, abilities and life goals. Identify academic strengths and challenges, set short and long term goals with appropriate action steps, and develop a semester plan.

Slide 4: Why Group Advising?
We want you to learn to navigate college processes and procedures with ease and efficiency Use semester scheduler, program advising sheet, college catalog and other resources to create a semester plan. We want you to understand college expectations and how to access available resources that support achievement. Take responsibility for your own learning: access support resources as needed.

Slide 5: Why Group Advising?
We want you to engage in co-curricular opportunities that support diverse interests and needs. Integrate co-curricular activities, at a reasonable level, into your academic plan. We want you to internalize the value of education as it relates to civic engagement and global responsibility. Choose classes and activities that support citizenship and global interest.

Slide 6: Why Group Advising?
We also want you to meet and interact with other students to develop a community of friends and learners

Slide 7: As part of your session today, you will complete your course selection for the upcoming semester - Here are a few Suggestions - If your program requires College Success Seminar (INT101), include this course in your first semester schedule. There are plenty of sections so choose one that best fits around your other classes. This course must be completed within the first 2 semesters. INT103 may take the place of INT101. If you placed into developmental courses, schedule these first.

Slide 8: As part of your session today, you will complete your course selection for the upcoming semester - Here are a few Suggestions - Read the "tips for creating a course schedule" (if you haven't already). These tips are on the back of the blank weekly calendar Strive for variety; if possible schedule a mix of general education and technical courses. If Liberal Arts, try to select courses from different disciplines such as math, science, English, languages, humanities, etc.

Slide 11: Understand College Expectations
Faculty DO have attendance policies
College assignments do have DUE dates.
YOU must be your own best advocate
Being able to problem solve is a valuable skill! Doing nothing when confronted with a problem is a choice, but not a solution. Don't just walk away from a class you don't like, or that isn't working for you. Go ahead and officially drop it with the registrar (but check with FA before you drop). If you want to earn a passing grade, show up and keep up
For every hour of class plan on 2 to 3 hours of additional study time
